SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ASSISTANT

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma; college-level coursework in education or related field.* (or at least three (3) years experience in the respective disciplinary area.)
• Minimum experience as determined by the Board.
• Knowledge of child growth and development and appropriate classroom practices and demonstrated ability to assist with instructional activities.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
• Substitute teaching certificate preferred.


REPORTS TO: Building Principal 

 

JOB GOALS:


Assists in the supervision of classroom activities under the direction and supervision of the certified classroom teacher, principal or other designated certified personnel while promoting the achievement of students’ educational goals and learning objectives by providing supplemental and clerical services to assist the classroom teacher.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program.
2. Assists teachers in the preparation of instructional materials, group demonstrations and other resources.
3. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
4. Assists teachers in shop/class management.
5. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
6. Communicates to teachers information regarding individual student’s problems and needs.
7. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
8. Assists with the maintenance of an adequate security system for supplies and equipment.
9. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers and other materials for instruction.
10. Follows established safety rules and regulations.
11. Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
12. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips and other school activities.

13. Helps the teacher to plan and maintain bulletin board and other classroom learning displays.
14. Reads to students, listens to students read and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
15. Checks notebooks, corrects papers and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
16. Performs clerical duties related to the instructional program including attendance reports, collection of money, duplication of materials and distribution and return of notices to home.
17. Participates in staff meetings and in-service training as assigned.
18. Performs other related duties and assignments determined on the basis of need.
19. Provides teacher with information regarding individual student’s problems and needs.
